Mega-cap five, risk-weighted
“make a basket of NVDA, MSFT, AVGO, AAPL and GOOGL weighted inversely to each name's 63-day volatility, rebalanced monthly, and hold it only while the basket trades above its 100-day average and SPY trades above its 200-day average, otherwise park in BIL”
Tested over May 2007 to October 2026. On data sealed Oct 15, 2026. Published 15 October 2026.
The contract
- 1. Universe. Trade only the megafive basket, SPY, BIL.
- 2. Basket. The megafive basket holds NVDA, MSFT, AVGO, AAPL, GOOGL weighted inversely to each name's 63-day realized volatility, measured on the sessions before each rebalance, rebalanced monthly; a member joins at the first rebalance after it lists and drops if it stops trading. A member with too little history to be sized is left out of that rebalance.
- 3. Signal. Each trading day at 09:35 ET, read the megafive basket’s close price.
- 4. Signal. Also read the megafive basket’s 100-day simple moving average.
- 5. Signal. Also read SPY’s close price.
- 6. Signal. Also read SPY’s 200-day simple moving average.
- 7. Entry. If the megafive basket’s close price exceeds the megafive basket’s 100-day average and SPY’s close price exceeds SPY’s 200-day average, set the target allocation of the megafive basket to 100% and set the target allocation of BIL to 0%.
- 8. Entry. Otherwise, set the target allocation of the megafive basket to 0% and set the target allocation of BIL to 100%.

Per-clause attribution
What each clause earned while its decision governed the portfolio, holds included; these add up to the total return. The second figure re-runs the backtest with that clause removed and shows how the result would change.
About these numbers
Window
Fills
Borrow
Every short pays 0.3% a year on the value of the position for each calendar day it is held. Where our data carries short interest, the rate steps up with short interest as a percent of shares outstanding, using the figure that was public before each session.
An assumption, not a record: we hold no historical borrow rates.
| Short interest | Borrow |
|---|---|
| 20% of shares outstanding or more | 12% a year |
| 10% of shares outstanding or more | 4% a year |
| 5% of shares outstanding or more | 1.5% a year |
| under 5%, or none on file | 0.3% a year |
